Word Nuts Reading available at the Los Angeles Public Library

We're proud to share that Word Nuts Reading is available at the Sunland-Tujunga Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library.

Starting May 16, 2026, families can explore and check out Word Nuts sets directly from the branch, bringing a proven,
hands-on reading tool into their homes through the library they already trust.

This partnership is something we've been working toward for months, and it means more to us than we can easily say.
Libraries have always been about putting the right tools in the right hands at the right time.
We're honored that LAPL sees Word Nuts Reading as one of those tools.

Inside the Sensory Spaces

The Sunland-Tujunga Branch recently launched its Sensory Spaces area, a dedicated zone within the library where children can touch, build, explore, and play their way into learning. It's a space designed to get kids physically engaged with the world around them, and it gets wonderfully lively.

That energy is exactly why Word Nuts Reading belongs here. The system is built around hands-on interaction. Children twist, rotate, and build words with their fingers. They say sounds out loud. They feel the click of each letter locking into place. In a space that invites kids to learn by doing, a tool that puts reading directly into their hands is a natural fit.

LAPL's investment in spaces like this reflects something important: that children learn best when they're active participants, not passive observers. Word Nuts was designed with that same belief at its core.

What Is Word Nuts Reading?

Word Nuts Reading is a sound-first literacy system that helps children build real reading skills through touch and repetition. The core of the system is simple: letter blocks called "nuts" thread onto a bolt. Children rotate the nuts to change one sound at a time, building and blending words physically rather than on paper or a screen.

Each session takes about five minutes. There's no prep, no lesson planning, and no special training required. A parent sits beside their child, points to the sounds, stretches the first one, and lets the blend happen naturally. The system is designed so that the structure does the teaching. You just show up and keep the tone warm.

It was built by a parent, for parents. It grew out of one father's experience helping his daughter close a reading gap over a single summer, using nothing but this tool and five minutes a day. The results were measured by the same standardized assessments used in schools across the country, and they were significant.

The system is grounded in the Science of Reading and aligned with structured literacy principles. It progresses through six phases, from individual letter sounds through digraphs, sight words, and Magic-E patterns, all on the same familiar bolt.

Just the Beginning

The Sunland-Tujunga Branch is the first library to carry Word Nuts Reading, and we're actively developing a deeper partnership with the Los Angeles Public Library to explore how this tool can support families across the system.

We believe libraries are one of the most important places for early literacy tools to live. They're free, they're trusted, and they meet families exactly where they are. If Word Nuts can help even one child at the Tujunga Branch fall in love with the sound of reading, this partnership will have been worth everything it took to build.

More details are coming soon. We'll share updates here as this story continues to develop.

A Personal Note From Michael

I volunteer at the Sunland-Tujunga Branch. I read with kids there, and I read with adults learning English for the first time. This library is part of my community in a way that's hard to overstate.

When I started building Word Nuts Reading, I was a parent trying to help his daughter. I didn't know it would lead here. But standing in a library I love, watching a tool I built with my own hands become part of how that library serves its families, is one of the most meaningful things I've experienced as a founder.

Thank you to the team at the Sunland-Tujunga Branch for believing in this work. And thank you to every parent who picks up the bolt and sits beside their child. That's where reading begins.
